I can only say what I've read and what my opinions are. Ask yourself what you need the iMac mainly for? The 27.5" has better specs, faster, screen can outperform anything on the market and speakers are louder. With the 27.5" screen it will become a second TV (is that a bad thing) and if you like making movies than it will run better. My needs are not so high so the 21.5" specs are more than perfect and transporting room to room is easy. I can’t say what to buy that’s down to what your needs. The Macbook is fantastic but is wasted if you don't transport it. The iMac is easy to transport room to room only a power cable to unplug! For me, bigger screen for everyday is a BIG plus.
